Have a question?

Below you will find the answers to all the questions we get asked the most often about our apprenticeships.

What do I need to apply?

  • Be aged 16 and over as of 1 September 2024 and 18 and over for our shift-based roles.
  • Have achieved or predicted a minimum of 5 GCSEs (or equivalent) at Level 4/C  which must include Maths, English and a Science.
  • Be living and eligible to work in the UK.

What if I do not get my predicted GCSE grades?

Our contracts are dependent on you receiving the minimum GCSE grades. If you do not meet these grades, we may have to withdraw our offer as entry to our apprenticeships is subject to this.

How do I apply?

Follow the link for the role and location you want to work from and fill in the application questions and attach your curriculum vitae.

What will I be asked in my application?

To help you prepare in your application we will ask you these questions:

What strengths, interests and experiences do you bring, that you think will help you build a successful career at British Sugar? (Max 300 words)

We are looking for examples that will help you perform well in this role and have a longer-term career with us. We are interested in your strengths, what you enjoy doing and any skills and experiences you have learnt and that you think are relevant to this role. Examples might include experiences at school, college, work, and home.

We believe in lifelong learning for high performance. What have you enjoyed learning recently? How did you go about learning it? Why did you enjoy learning it? (Max 300 words)

We are looking for why you decide to learn, what you enjoy learning, and how you learn. Examples might include experiences at school, college, work, and home.

Will I be guaranteed a role at British Sugar at the end of my apprenticeship?

On successful completion of your scheme, we will make every endeavour to appoint you into a permanent role however this does depend on your performance and our business needs.

What holidays do I get per year?

We offer 26 days plus bank holidays per annum. This is dependent upon your shift pattern if you work one.

Will my salary increase during my apprenticeship?

We review your salary annually and increase your salary when you have successfully completed the work and learning required within that year.

What would my salary be after my apprenticeship?

We know we do pay very competitively. Your salary will depend on the role you are trained for and if you are required to work shifts.

Why do I need the right to work in the UK?

We welcome all applications and we are not allowed to employ anyone who does not have the legal right to live and work in the UK. During our hiring process, we will need to ask for proof with suitable documentation.

What support do I get?

We have amazing talent and expertise in our British Sugar teams. We offer an onboarding programme to set you up for success. You will have a Line Leader accountable for your personal growth and development and a subject matter expert who will help with knowledge transfer to help you grow. We also offer local team social events and activities.

What if I need adjustments to be at my best?

Talk to us and we will help you in the best way we can. Share with us what you need and we will listen.

Do I need a driving licence?

Yes for our Agriculture apprenticeships as you will need to travel to our remote grower farm locations that are not accessible on public transport.

For all of our apprenticeships there is a requirement for you to be able to get to college which may be an hour away from your normal place of work at one of our factory locations.

When would I start?

You will join and onboard as one apprenticeship group in September 2024.

Will I hear back after I have applied?

Yes, we will confirm back that we have received your application and whether we will take your application to the next stage. We will also offer feedback in support of your development.
